That man was a young U.S. Senator from Illinois. At that time most people didn't even know how to pronounce his name, but I knew that if there was any miraculous way we could get him to be the President, he would bring our troops home and stop using them as what I and others considered to be expendable pawns in Iraq. I watched as he appeared on the Oprah Show in 2006 and when asked of the possible Presidential run, he just kind of chuckled off the thought. At that time, I started to post on various anti-Iraq Invasion sites about the new/young Senator....including how we all need to rally behind him to become President. The movement/voice grew into what became The Blacks4Barack Org. Although an extremely far-fetched idea, particularly since he would find himself running against the wife of who many Blacks nicknamed The 1st Black President (Bill Clinton...because of his cool, sunglass wearing, sax playing appearance on Arsenio Hall's Show), I felt that if Blacks could learn more about the man, the combination of White votes along with Black votes could make this monumental vision a reality. But Blacks were not feeling Obama at first, combined with the pre-defeatist mindset that " America Ain't Gonna Elect No Black President". So I along with others who joined along the way (of all races) worked diligently through blogs, sites, comment boxes, postings, any way/where we could, to help people learn more....not just because he was Black (there have been numerous other Blacks to run for President in the past) but because we all felt he was the right one for the job. And as we all know...through the grinding spirit of positive, collective, united, uplifting, inspired working/volunteering of so many....Yes We Did !</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">Fast forward to now, in 2022, where I am sadly finding myself beyond disappointed in what I have always considered to be my Party. Instead of the vibrant, invigorating, united, focused-to-achieve Party that led us to Yes We Did...my Party has become overtaken by the spirit of anger, hatred, desire to destroy, so-called cancel (bully) culture, burn-things-down, brick throwing, doxing (posting home addresses, credit card and social security numbers of Supreme Court Justices and others) and other negative actions which are all the complete opposite of what is needed to collectively achieve. It's as if my Party has been highjacked or taken over by some forces that are actually out to destroy, instead of achieve. To tear down, instead of build up...combined with an incredibly anti-American level of disrespect for all things, ranging from the position of President, Supreme Court Justices, schools, churches, 1st Amendment (censoring), 2nd Amendment (used to say Republicans wanted to take our guns....now it's the Dems) and the list goes on, including the fact that my Party has even become the Pro-War Party ! Talk about a flip-flop.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">It's as if we, as Democrats, have been brain-washed to simply follow our party despite them not doing a good job of addressing the needs of We The People, whom they are supposedly in office to represent. But instead of actually doing the work needed, it's as if they have taken over the Dem leaning media and hired them to try to 'convince' us that a good job is being done....when it clearly isn't. Manipulation, strategic reporting, the withholding of certain truths, constant fake polls and other tactics used daily have become so see-through that it is insulting. Homelessness higher than ever. Gas, food, shelter, transportation prices higher then ever, struggling trucking industry, baby formula shortages, cost of living in general higher then ever...and the list goes on, all while D.C. simultaneously sends billions to other countries ! Crazy !</span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: medium;">Part of the manipulation tactics that are totally see-through is to convince folks that if you speak about the things you are not happy with in your own Party, then it must mean that you're for the other Party. That is the exact absolute asinine, puppet-minded, well trained, stay in your place mentality that makes the politicians feel so comfortable and secure at doing absolutely nothing tangible for We The People. The old ' they'll vote for us anyway ' cocky attitude which has actually been the case for so/too long. (same cocky attitude that gave us Trump). I was never a lifelong Dem, or the Founder of Blacks 4 Barack because of anything appealing about the Repubs. But rather, the complete opposite. But just as I, through clear conscious and eyes could easily see the things that I did not like in the Repub Party...I have that same vision and inner capability to see what I don't like in my Dem Party. A recent report in U.S. News stated that more than 1 million Dem voters in 43 states have recently left the Dem Party. That's serious people ! And I doubt if it's because they all suddenly love the Repubs. Once PPACA goes into full effect in January 2014, you can expect your health insurance to cover prescription drugs, hospitalization, pregnancy, newborn care and rehabilitation and mental health services. <br />
<a href="http://www.hhs.gov/healthcare/rights/pre-existing/childrens-pre-existing-conditions.html" target="_hplink">Currently, any new health plan cannot deny coverage of preexisting conditions or disabilities in children under age 19</a>. In 2014, <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/what-if-i-have-a-pre-existing-health-condition/" target="_hplink">all plans will have to cover those conditions</a> for a person of any age.<br />
<strong></strong><br />
<strong>What are the basics of PPACA?</strong><br />
PPACA, commonly referred to as the Affordable Care Act, will go into effect officially on January 1, 2014. Here's an overview of what the bill requires:<br />
<ul>
<li class="first last">Almost all Americans must be insured in some form. Each person who is required to but doesn't purchase coverage will <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/what-if-someone-doesnt-have-health-coverage-in-2014/" target="_hplink">face a penalty</a>, which is either 1 percent of your annual income, or $95 -- whichever amount is greater. (If you're not sure if you're required to purchase coverage, see the <a href="http://healthreform.kff.org/~/media/Files/KHS/Flowcharts/requirement_flowchart_2.pdf" target="_hplink">details of the exemptions</a>.)</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li class="first last">Americans with an income of up to 400 percent of the poverty level who don't receive health benefits through their place of employment (or through Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP or military coverage) will <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/will-i-qualify-to-save-on-monthly-premiums/" target="_hplink">qualify for government subsidie</a> -- a break on premiums in the form of tax credits available.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li class="first last">People with a household income <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/veer-gidwaney/%ff.org/health-reform/fact-sheetho-benefits-from-the-aca-medicaid-expansion/" target="_hplink">below 138 percent of the poverty level</a> (which is $23,550 for a family of four in 2013), will qualify for Medicaid.</li>
</ul>
<ul>

<li class="first last">Insurance companies will be required to <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/guaranteed-issue/" target="_hplink">cover all applicants</a> and offer the same rates regardless of pre-existing conditions, age or gender.</li>
</ul>
<strong>How much does health insurance cost?</strong><br />
Insurance premium rates are set by the government, and if you're buying individual health insurance (not through an employer) your specific rate will be based on your age and zip code. <br />
Individual premium rates are determined by a process called underwriting, during which an underwriter will use information about the applicant, such as their medical history, age, weight, and several other factors, to determine whether that person is an insurable risk or not. This process is based on probabilities and <a href="http://maxwellhealth.freshdesk.com/solution/articles/46062-law-of-large-numbers" target="_hplink">the law of large numbers</a>.<br />
<strong>What are exchanges?</strong><br />
Private health insurance exchanges are new marketplaces put in place in response to the Affordable Care Act that will allow individuals without employer-sponsored insurance to purchase individual insurance in a shopping-like experience. Licensed individuals called navigators will be available to assist individuals using the marketplaces.<br />
Insurance premiums for groups (insurance you get through your employer or an association of similar individuals) are determined through underwriting as well, but larger groups are able to get lower rates.<br />
<strong>How about deductibles?</strong><br />
Another commonly misunderstood concept is how deductibles work. More and more employers are opting to enroll employees in IRS-qualified High-Deductible Health Plans, <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2012/nov/14/business/la-fi-mo-employer-health-plans-20121114" target="_hplink">up to 1 in 3 from only 12 percent in 2007</a>. A High-Deductible Health Plan is a relatively new type of health plan, with lower premiums and higher deductibles. <br />
In order to be called this, a HDHP must be qualified by the IRS, which can happen if the plan has a minimum annual family deductible<a href="http://www.accountingweb.com/topic/tax/irs-raises-limits-hsas-and-hdhps-2013" target="_hplink"> of $2,500 or $1,250 for an individual</a>. There are also restrictions on the maximum out-of-pocket, at $12,500 for a family and $6,250 for an individual. These plans are compatible with Health Savings Accounts (HSA's) and in fact, are requirements for participation in an HSA.<br />
An HDHP might be for you or your family if you're generally healthy and are usually able to anticipate the amount you spend on health care, outside of your premium payment, per month. <br />
The low premium allows you to make room in your budget to be able to put aside money in your HSA, which you can then spend on things like doctor's visits, prescriptions, and any tests or procedures you have to get done. You won't be paying co-pays, if that's something you're used to, but instead will pay the negotiated rate for your doctor or hospital bills, which you can do with the pre-tax/tax-deductible HSA funds.<br />
<strong>What is coinsurance?</strong><br />
If you have a <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/co-insurance/" target="_hplink">coinsurance amount on your policy</a>, it will be in the form of a percentage -- the amount of a medical bill you have to pay after you've met your deductible.<br />
For instance, let's say you have a $5,000 deductible, with a $10,000 out-of-pocket maximum and 20 percent coinsurance. You meet your deductible in October, but in November, you get sick and have to visit your doctor and have a few tests done. The bill for that comes to $1,000, but the negotiated rate is $300. <br />
Since you've already met your deductible and are now in "coinsurance" mode, but haven't yet met that out-of-pocket maximum, you'll be paying 20 percent of that $300 amount (which would be $60). You'll continue to pay 20 percent of any bills you get for accepted claims, until you've spent the rest of that remaining $5,000 of your out-of-pocket maximum.<br />
<strong>What are HMOs and PPOs?</strong><br />
The way you go about getting health care may change depending on the type of network your insurance plan is covered under. Two major types are <a href="https://www.healthcare.gov/what-are-the-different-types-of-health-insurance/" target="_hplink">HMOs and PPOs.</a> <br />
A Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) is an organization that coordinates care for insured members by contracting network care providers on a prepaid basis. An HMO requires you to choose a Primary Care Physician (PCP) who coordinates your care by seeing you for preventive care visits and common medical conditions, as well as being responsible for referring you to specialists or for certain procedures outside of the PCP's area of expertise.<br />
A Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) is an organization that selects "preferred" providers, any of whom an insured member can see without referrals or a Primary Care Physician's go-ahead. When you receive care from one of these preferred providers, you'll often pay a co-pay. Payment for other services in-network will count toward your deductible, if you have one. <br />
<strong>What if you leave your job?</strong><br />
Finally, if you've recently left a job, it's likely you're currently covered under COBRA (which stands for the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act). COBRA coverage is more expensive than employer-sponsored insurance because you as the former employee are handling that entire premium amount yourself, instead of the employer contributing to it or paying the entire amount. <br />
It might actually be <a href="http://www.kaiserhealthnews.org/Features/Insuring-Your-Health/2013/091713-Michelle-Andrews-COBRA-and-health-exchanges.aspx" target="_hplink">more cost-effective</a> for you to secure coverage through the public marketplaces, since you may be eligible for tax subsidies that would lower that monthly premium amount.<br />

the Affordable Care Act will go live and give uninsured Americans the chance to
buy the same quality, affordable health care as everyone else. It is also the
day when some Republicans in Congress might shut down the government just
because they don’t like the law. The President urged Congress to both pass a
budget by Monday and raise the nation’s debt ceiling so that we can keep growing
the economy.

Washington (CNN) -- In unscheduled and unusually personal remarks, President Barack Obama tried Friday to explain why African-Americans were upset about last week's acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin while lowering expectations for federal charges in the case.
"Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago," Obama told White House reporters in a surprise appearance at the daily briefing.
<br />

His remarks, which lasted about 20 minutes, escalated a nationwide debate on the verdict that has prompted protests, including some that turned violent.
A Florida jury acquitted Zimmerman last Saturday in Martin's February 26, 2012, shooting death, inciting anger among many who considered the incident racially motivated murder.
Obama issued a written statement on Sunday, noting that the jury had spoken and urging calm and reflection. <br />

Despite some calls for him to speak about the case, the nation's first African-American president had made no further public comment until Friday.
Speaking without a teleprompter, Obama noted a history of racial disparity in law as well as more nuanced social prejudice that contribute to "a lot of pain" in the African-American community over the verdict.
"There are very few African-American men in this country who have not had the experience of being followed when they are shopping at a department store. That includes me," the president said.
"There are probably very few African-American men who have not had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars. That happens to me - at least before I was a senator," he continued.

"There are very few African-Americans who have not had the experience of getting on an elevator and a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she had the chance to get off. That happens often," he said.

Saying he didn't intend to exaggerate those experiences, Obama added that they "inform how the African-American community interprets what happened one night in Florida."
"The African-American community is also knowledgeable that there is a history of racial disparities in the application of our criminal laws, everything from the death penalty to enforcement of our drug laws," he said. "And that ends up having an impact in terms of how people interpret the case."
African-Americans feel the context of the Martin killing is little known or denied, "and that all contributes, I think, to a sense that if a white male teen was involved in the same kind of scenario that, from top to bottom, both the outcome and the aftermath might have been different," Obama said. Earlier today, I was briefed by my homeland security team on the events in Boston. We’re continuing to monitor and respond to the situation as it unfolds. And I’ve directed the full resources of the federal government to help state and local authorities protect our people, increase security around the United States as necessary, and investigate what happened.<br />

The American people will say a prayer for Boston tonight. And Michelle and I send our deepest thoughts and prayers to the families of the victims in the wake of this senseless loss.<br />
We don’t yet have all the answers. But we do know that multiple people have been wounded, some gravely, in explosions at the Boston Marathon.<br />

I’ve spoken to FBI Director Mueller and Secretary of Homeland Security Napolitano, and they’re mobilizing the appropriate resources to investigate and to respond.<br />

I’ve updated leaders of Congress in both parties, and we reaffirmed that on days like this there are no Republicans or Democrats -- we are Americans, united in concern for our fellow citizens.<br />
I’ve also spoken with Governor Patrick and Mayor Menino, and made it clear that they have every single federal resource necessary to care for the victims and counsel the families. And above all, I made clear to them that all Americans stand with the people of Boston.<br />
<br />
Boston police, firefighters, and first responders as well as the National Guard responded heroically, and continue to do so as we speak. It’s a reminder that so many Americans serve and sacrifice on our behalf every single day, without regard to their own safety, in dangerous and difficult circumstances. And we salute all those who assisted in responding so quickly and professionally to this tragedy.<br />
We still do not know who did this or why. And people shouldn’t jump to conclusions before we have all the facts. But make no mistake -- we will get to the bottom of this. And we will find out who did this; we'll find out why they did this. Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice.<br />
<br />
Today is a holiday in Massachusetts -- Patriots’ Day. It’s a day that celebrates the free and fiercely independent spirit that this great American city of Boston has reflected from the earliest days of our nation. And it’s a day that draws the world to Boston’s streets in a spirit of friendly competition. Boston is a tough and resilient town. So are its people. I'm supremely confident that Bostonians will pull together, take care of each other, and move forward as one proud city. And as they do, the American people will be with them every single step of the way.<br />

You should anticipate that as we get more information, our teams will provide you briefings. We're still in the investigation stage at this point. But I just want to reiterate we will find out who did this and we will hold them accountable.<br />

First Lady Michelle Obama will attend Saturday’s funeral service in Chicago for slain teen Hadiya Pendleton, who was gunned down just days after performing at the inauguration festivities for the President in Washington, D.C, according to ABC News.<br />
<br />
The 15-year-old was fatally shot and killed on Jan. 29 at a park on Chicago’s South Side, barely a mile from the Obama family’s home, the Associated Press reported. There have been no arrests in her case, according to the New York Times.<br />
<br />
A White House official said on Thursday that the First Lady is not expected to make public remarks at the funeral, and the Obama daughters are not expected to accompany their mother, according to the Chicago Tribune. The White House official spoke on condition of anonymity because the First Lady’s travels had not been formally announced, according to the Associated Press.<br />
<br />
White House senior advisor Valerie Jarrett and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, both from Chicago, will also attend the funeral, the Washington Post reported.<br />
<br />
An honors student, volleyball player and band majorette at King College Prep School, Pendleton performed last month with her classmates at an inauguration party sponsored by Representative Danny K. Davis, Democrat of Illinois, the New York Times reported.<br />
<br />
Pendleton’s death, according to the Washington Post, brought renewed attention to the Windy City’s homicide rate and the debate over gun violence in the United States. Her killing was the city’s 42nd homicide of 2013, after more than 500 deaths last year, the New York Times said.<br />
<br />
The First Lady’s decision to attend the funeral comes as the Obama administration steps up its gun control push next week and before the President lays out his plan to confront gun violence in his State of the Union speech on Tuesday.<br />

Each time we gather to inaugurate a president, we bear witness to the enduring strength of our Constitution. We affirm the promise of our democracy. We recall that what binds this nation together is not the colors of our skin or the tenets of our faith or the origins of our names. What makes us exceptional – what makes us American – is our allegiance to an idea, articulated in a declaration made more than two centuries ago:<br />

We cannot cede to other nations the technology that will power new jobs and new industries – we must claim its promise. That is how we will maintain our economic vitality and our national treasure – our forests and waterways; our croplands and snowcapped peaks. President Obama reiterated his commitment to do everything in his power to
implement a series of commonsense measures that would reduce gun violence in
America. The President started off that effort with 23 concrete actions his
Administration is taking immediately under its existing legal authority. But to
have a lasting impact, Congress must join the administration by passing
commonsense laws like requiring a universal background check for anyone trying
to buy a gun, and restoring a ban on military-style assault weapons and a
10-round limit for magazines. If they do that, we can respect the Second
Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens while helping to keep the irresponsible
few from causing massive harm.</span></div>

"This is our first task as a society: keeping our children safe. This is how we will be judged," Obama said. “We can’t put this off any longer."<br />

The proposal, which comes at the end of a month-long review process spearheaded by Vice President Joe Biden, is broken down into four key subsections: law enforcement, the availability of dangerous firearms and ammunition, school safety and mental health.<br />
<br />
In an effort to touch on all four of those elements, the president recommended requiring criminal background checks for all gun sales; reinstating the assault weapons ban; restoring a 10-round limit on ammunition magazines; eliminating armor-piercing bullets; providing mental health services in schools; allocating funds to hire more police officers; and instituting a federal gun trafficking statute, among other policies. The cost of the package, senior officials estimated, would be roughly $500 million, some of which could come from already budgeted funds.<br />
<br />
Because these recommendations require congressional approval, the administration is supplementing its proposal with 23 executive actions that will be taken immediately. Those actions include requiring federal agencies to hand over relevant data for a background check system; providing law enforcement officials, first responders and school officials with better training for active shooting situations; directing the Centers for Disease Control to research the causes and prevention of gun violence; and many more.<br />
<br />
"I intend to use whatever weight this office holds to make them a reality," said the president, speaking about his full set of recommendations. "If there's even one life that can be saved, then we've got an obligation to try."<br />
<br />
The approach is so sweeping that what would have otherwise been a headline-grabbing announcement received second billing. The president on Wednesday will nominate Byron Todd Jones, the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, to take over the post permanently.<br />

A SENSE OF URGENCY is the most ephemeral thing in politics. That’s why the debate over gun control is reaching a key moment. The opportunity to do something serious about gun violence must not be lost. Vice President Biden, heading up the <a data-xslt="_http" href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/obama-asks-cabinet-members-for-proposals-to-curb-gun-violence/2012/12/17/ac4a8dae-4869-11e2-ad54-580638ede391_story_1.html">task force created after the Newtown, Conn., school massacre</a>, kept the issue alive this week in a series of high-profile meetings with interested groups, from victims of gun violence to the National Rifle Association. The next step is to move from talk to action.<br />
<br />
The <a data-xslt="_http" href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2013/01/09/biden-vows-white-house-action-on-gun-control/">Biden group</a> is considering measures that would be <a data-xslt="_http" href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/white-house-weighs-broad-gun-control-agenda-in-wake-of-newtown-shootings/2013/01/05/d281efe0-5682-11e2-bf3e-76c0a789346f_story.html">broad and comprehensive</a>, going well beyond reinstating the expired assault-weapons ban, including: universal background checks for firearms buyers; tracking the movement and sale of weapons through a national database; strengthening mental-health checks; and stiffening penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors. The vice president also raised the possibility that the White House could implement some measures by executive order, without legislation; a list of recommendations was drawn up in 2011 by the Justice Department but put on ice during the presidential campaign. (Note: But this list does NOT in any way include the slightest unconstitutional thought of taking away everyone's guns)<br />
<br />
The working group is right to think big, yet it must be cognizant that legislation will face stiff opposition from the National Rifle Association. In today’s polarized environment, an omnibus bill might offer everyone something to oppose. It would be a mistake to ask Congress for a package so big that it sinks. <br />
<br />
We support reinstatement of the expired ban on sales of new assault weapons and limits on high-capacity ammunition clips. These military weapons have no place in civilian hands. But this is not a whole strategy. The use of assault weapons in mass killings is horrific, but they are used in only a fraction of the nation’s deaths from gun violence. And any ban on new-weapons sales would not address the millions of assault weapons in private hands. THE PRESIDENT: Good evening, everybody, and let’s give it up for our host –- the tallest elf I’ve ever seen –- Conan O’Brien. (Laughter and applause.) We’re also grateful to all the outstanding performers, the choirs, the glee clubs who are sharing their tremendous talents with us. <br />
<br />
Tonight is a chance to get in the Christmas spirit; to spread some joy and sing along with artists who have much better voices than we do. (Laughter.) But it’s also a chance to make a real difference in the lives of some very brave young people being treated at Children’s National Medical Center. Many of these kids and their parents are going through tough times right now, and your support helps give them a reason to hope –- not just during the holidays, but all year round.<br />
<br />
And that’s really what Christmas is all about. Each of us is incredibly blessed in so many ways. But those blessings aren’t just meant to be enjoyed -- they’re meant to be used and shared with those who have less. The Christian faith teaches us that on this day a child was born so that we might have eternal life. And at the heart of many of the world’s great religions is the idea that we’re all better off when we treat our brothers and sisters with the same love and compassion that we want for ourselves.<br />
<br />
So yes, tonight is about Conan and Diana Ross and Santa and all the other talented folks on this stage. But it’s also about the Americans who are spending this holiday in a hospital bed, or a shelter, or protecting our freedom on a battlefield far from home. Let’s keep them in our prayers, and follow Christ’s calling to love one another as He has loved all of us.<br />

ENSURING ENFORCEMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ABORTION
RESTRICTIONS IN THE PATIENT PROTECTION AND AFFORDABLE CARE ACT</div>
<br />
By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws
of the United States of America, including the "Patient Protection and
Affordable Care Act" (Public Law 111-148), I hereby order as follows:<br />
<br />
<u>Section. 1. Policy.</u> Following the recent enactment of the Patient
Protection and Affordable Care Act (the "Act"), it is necessary to establish an
adequate enforcement mechanism to ensure that Federal funds are not used for
abortion services (except in cases of rape or incest, or when the life of the
woman would be endangered), consistent with a longstanding Federal statutory
restriction that is commonly known as the Hyde Amendment. The purpose of this
order is to establish a comprehensive, Government-wide set of policies and
procedures to achieve this goal and to make certain that all relevant actors --
Federal officials, State officials (including insurance regulators) and health
care providers -- are aware of their responsibilities, new and old.<br />
<br />
The Act maintains current Hyde Amendment restrictions governing abortion
policy and extends those restrictions to the newly created health insurance
exchanges. Under the Act, longstanding Federal laws to protect conscience (such
as the Church Amendment, 42 U.S.C. 300a-7, and the Weldon Amendment, section
508(d)(1) of Public Law 111-8) remain intact and new protections prohibit
discrimination against health care facilities and health care providers because
of an unwillingness to provide, pay for, provide coverage of, or refer for
abortions.<br />
<br />
Numerous executive agencies have a role in ensuring that these restrictions
are enforced, including the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the
Office of Management and Budget (OMB), and the Office of Personnel
Management.<br />
<br />
<u>Sec. 2. Strict Compliance with Prohibitions on Abortion Funding in Health
Insurance Exchanges.</u> The Act specifically prohibits the use of tax credits
and cost-sharing reduction payments to pay for abortion services (except in
cases of rape or incest, or when the life of the woman would be endangered) in
the health insurance exchanges that will be operational in 2014. The Act also
imposes strict payment and accounting requirements to ensure that Federal funds
are not used for abortion services in exchange plans (except in cases of rape or
incest, or when the life of the woman would be endangered) and requires State
health insurance commissioners to ensure that exchange plan funds are segregated
by insurance companies in accordance with generally accepted accounting
principles, OMB funds management circulars, and accounting guidance provided by
the Government Accountability Office.<br />
<br />
I hereby direct the Director of the OMB and the Secretary of HHS to develop,
within 180 days of the date of this order, a model set of segregation guidelines
for State health insurance commissioners to use when determining whether
exchange plans are complying with the Act's segregation requirements,
established in section 1303 of the Act, for enrollees receiving Federal
financial assistance. The guidelines shall also offer technical information that
States should follow to conduct independent regular audits of insurance
companies that participate in the health insurance exchanges. In developing
these model guidelines, the Director of the OMB and the Secretary of HHS shall
consult with executive agencies and offices that have relevant expertise in
accounting principles, including, but not limited to, the Department of the
Treasury, and with the Government Accountability Office. Upon completion of
those model guidelines, the Secretary of HHS should promptly initiate a
rulemaking to issue regulations, which will have the force of law, to interpret
the Act's segregation requirements, and shall provide guidance to State health
insurance commissioners on how to comply with the model guidelines.<br />
<br />
<u>Sec. 3. Community Health Center Program.</u> The Act establishes a new
Community Health Center (CHC) Fund within HHS, which provides additional Federal
funds for the community health center program. Existing law prohibits these
centers from using Federal funds to provide abortion services (except in cases
of rape or incest, or when the life of the woman would be endangered), as a
result of both the Hyde Amendment and longstanding regulations containing the
Hyde language. Under the Act, the Hyde language shall apply to the authorization
and appropriations of funds for Community Health Centers under section 10503 and
all other relevant provisions. I hereby direct the Secretary of HHS to ensure
that program administrators and recipients of Federal funds are aware of and
comply with the limitations on abortion services imposed on CHCs by existing
law. Such actions should include, but are not limited to, updating Grant Policy
Statements that accompany CHC grants and issuing new interpretive rules.<br />
<br />
<u>Sec. 4. General Provisions.</u> (a) Nothing in this order shall be
construed to impair or otherwise affect: (i) authority granted by law or
Presidential directive to an agency, or the head thereof; or (ii) functions of
the Director of the OMB relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative
proposals.<br />
<br />
(b) This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and
subject to the availability of appropriations.<br />
<br />
(c) This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit,
substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against
the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers,
employees or agents, or any other person.<br />

Reading what has been written about statements I made on the effect of the Affordable Care Act on our franchisees reminds me of a quote from Lewis H. Lapham, former editor of <em>Harper's</em> magazine: "People may expect too much of journalism. Not only do they expect it to be entertaining, they expect it to be true."<br />
Many in the media reported that I said Papa John's is going to close stores and cut jobs because of Obamacare. I never said that. The fact is we are going to open over hundreds of stores this year and next and increase employment by over 5,000 jobs worldwide. And, we have no plans to cut team hours as a result of the Affordable Care Act. <br />
Clearly there was some misunderstanding somewhere. The remarks that generated the headlines were made during an entrepreneur class I was asked to speak to at a Florida college. I was asked to share my experience as an entrepreneur and to provide the students with real-life small business situations. Unbeknownst to me, until she identified herself, a reporter was there. <br />
Here is the part of the interchange that was the genesis of the news:<br />
Reporter: "Do you think your -- you know -- franchise owners... are going to cut people hours back to make them part time instead of full time?"<br />
Me: "Well, in Hawaii there is a form of the same kind of health insurance and that's what you do, you find loopholes to get around it. That's what they're going to do."<br />
Reporter: "My understanding is that if you're a full time employee, which is 35 hours or over, you'd be covered. Or if you're part time then you wouldn't be. So wouldn't some business owners just cut people down like 34 hours a week so they wouldn't have to pay for health insurance?"<br />
Me: "It's common sense. It's what I call lose-lose."<br />
The reporter asked what I believed Papa John's franchisees would do in response to Obamacare, not what Papa John's would do. In fact, her question was "wouldn't some business owners just cut people down like 34 hours a week so they wouldn't have to pay for health insurance?" <br />
My answer: "It's common sense."<br />
Companies like Papa John's are largely a collection of small independent businesses. The average Papa John's franchisee owns three to four stores. Since our franchisees own the restaurants they operate, who they hire, how many hours they give each employee and what they pay each employee is up to them, not me or Papa John's. Like any small business in these economic times, our franchisees are under a tremendous amount of pressure on costs. <br />
During that same interview, talking about Obamacare I said, though it wasn't widely reported:<br />
<ul>
<li class="first">"The good news is 100% of the population (full-time workers) is going to get health insurance. I'm cool with that." </li>
<li>"We're all going to pay for it. There's nothing for free." </li>
<li class="last">"And this way I get to provide health insurance and I'm not at a competitive disadvantage ... our competitors are going to have to do the same thing."</li>
</ul>
Papa John's, like most businesses, is still researching what the Affordable Care Act means to our operations. Regardless of the conclusion of our analysis, we will honor this law, as we do all laws, and continue to offer 100% of Papa John's corporate employees and workers in company-owned stores health insurance as we have since the company was founded in 1984. <br />

The town of Pella, Iowa, looks an almost too perfect vision of smalltown America. Surrounded by a chessboard of prosperous farmland and with a bustling town square, lined with shops bearing the surnames of its first Dutch settlers, Pella feels like a throwback to a different age.<br />
But beneath its attractive exterior last week one could find some ugly sentiments on election day. "Obama is a Muslim," said Shirley Schutte, 75. Was she sure about that? "I am. I am not sure he even should have been there [in the White House]. He has been a disaster."<br />
Such a fervent belief is not typical of most Republican voters, whether in Pella or anywhere else in America. But it is not hard to find. One poll in Mississippi even found some 52% of likely Republican voters suspected President <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/barack-obama" title="More from guardian.co.uk on Barack Obama">Barack Obama</a> was a follower of Islam. Neither has the party leadership done too much to discourage equally outlandish ideas, such as Obama being born in Kenya. <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/oct/25/donald-trump-kenyan-barack-obama" title="">From business mogul Donald Trump</a> to top elected officials, <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/republicans" title="More from guardian.co.uk on Republicans">Republicans</a> have carefully crafted a message of Obama as a radical "other" hoping to transform America in some dangerous way.<br />
Yet far from exiling Obama outside the US mainstream, many experts, now including leading conservative figures, believe the Republican party itself is being pushed into the political wilderness. The Republicans increasingly look like the party of angry, older white people. People like Schutte. And that does not work in America any more.<br />
As Republicans sifted through the wreckage of the <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/mittromney" title="More from guardian.co.uk on Mitt Romney">Mitt Romney</a> campaign, they saw collapsing popularity among fast-emerging ethnic groups, such as Hispanics, and key social demographics, such as young people. In an economy struggling with 7.9% unemployment, where more than half of voters believed the country was heading in the wrong direction and against an unpopular incumbent, the once fiercely effective Republican party machine only managed to craft a devastating defeat.<br />
Some say the reason is a simple failure to change in an America that is becoming less white and more socially liberal. "They look a lot more like a political party of the 1950s than a party of the 21st century," said Professor David Cohen, a political scientist at the University of Akron in Ohio. "They are at risk of being irrelevant."<br />
Some in the party know it. Even though the corpse of the defeated Romney campaign is still warm, a bitter fight has started to break out over its meaning in Republican ranks. On one side are the modernists, who understand that the party cannot afford to be seen as a backwards-looking ghetto for white voters. On the other are the nativists, angry at a crippled and ineffective immigration system, who believe that only a true message of pure conservatism will save the day. It is a battle for the soul of the Republican party and the first shots are being fired. "I think it is going to be a war. I really do," said Larry Haas, a political commentator and former aide in the Clinton White House.<br />

Last week the Romney campaign in the key swing state of Iowa held a "victory" party in the capital, Des Moines. Right in the American heartland, in the very state that gave birth to Obama's presidential ambitions in 2008, the great and good of the local Republican party gathered in a downtown hotel ballroom to celebrate their side's expected win.<br />
But shortly after the local TV station announced Obama had won Iowa – in the end by a hefty six percentage points – <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/fox-news" title="More from guardian.co.uk on Fox News">Fox News</a> said that the White House also would remain in Democratic hands. The mood of the almost entirely white gathering of several hundred rapidly deflated. Some headed to the exits. One woman muttered angrily to her companion: "It is the dumbing down of America."<br />
This is the side of the Republican party that has dominated its internal politics for four years. It is a party that almost seems to exist in its own vacuum of rightwing thought. Infused with Tea Party radicals, it has backed hardline immigration laws in states such as Arizona that many Hispanics see as racist. It boasted two Senate candidates who made tone-deaf comments about rape that cost them otherwise easy victories. It is still male-dominated, yet finds time to take hardline ideological stances on female contraception and abortion. This is the party that appears implacably hostile to gay Americans even as last week four more states held ballots on gay marriage and all voted in favour. "Does social conservatism continue to be a albatross around the neck of the party?" said Professor Gerard Alexander of the conservative American Enterprise Institute.<br />
But it is not just social issues. On economics the Republican party plays host to a powerful and vocal wing of libertarians who wish to slash and burn government spending. They cling to a conservative world view that has forced previously extreme stances – such as abolishing the federal Department of Education and returning the dollar to the gold standard – into the heart of Republican thought. Not even the vast amount of cash that<a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/nov/01/sheldon-adelson-billions-politics-influence" title=""> Republican big money operators poured into the 2012 race</a> was able to have a major impact. Of the top 10 Senate candidates that political guru <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/karl-rove" title="More from guardian.co.uk on Karl Rove">Karl Rove</a>'s American Crossroads group spent the most on, just one resulted in a Democratic defeat. Casino billionaire Sheldon Adelson backed eight candidates – including Romney – with around $60m over the whole election cycle. None of them won.<br />
To many observers, the Republicans are turning into a party that cannot win office. It has been dominated by the punditocracy of Fox News and the enormous influence of rightwing media stars such as <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/glenn-beck" title="More from guardian.co.uk on Glenn Beck">Glenn Beck</a> and <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/rush-limbaugh" title="More from guardian.co.uk on Rush Limbaugh">Rush Limbaugh</a>. It believes it does not need to change, but must maintain ideological purity and run a true conservative candidate. In Romney it sees the failure of a moderate who did not really believe the conservative values he had to espouse to win his party's nomination.They point out Obama's victory was built on a superior ground game, which turned out its base. They can even say Obama only beat Romney by 50% to 48% – a sliver that only grows large in the undemocratic electoral college.<br />
<em>Washington Post</em> columnist Charles Krauthammer has emerged as one of the leading lights of this message. "The answer to Romney's failure is not retreat, not apeing the <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/democrats" title="More from guardian.co.uk on Democrats">Democrats</a>' patchwork pandering," he thundered. "No whimpering. No whining. No reinvention when none is needed. Do conservatism, but do it better."<br />
Limbaugh was more blunt. "I went to bed last night thinking we're outnumbered. I went to bed last night thinking we'd lost the country," he told listeners as Romney went down. But perhaps Fox News host Bill O'Reilly – for many fans the very incarnation of the average white man – was the most blatant: "The white establishment is now the minority … it's not a traditional America any more."<br />
<br />
But many are lining up on the other side of the trenches. Indeed, even Krauthammer acknowledges the party has a serious problem with Hispanic voters, who now make up the fastest-growing part of the electorate and went for Obama by some 70%. These are people such as Texas senator Ted Cruz and Florida senator <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/marco-rubio" title="More from guardian.co.uk on Marco Rubio">Marco Rubio</a>, who has already announced his intention to visit Iowa this month, effectively firing the first shot of the 2016 campaign. They also include former Florida governor Jeb Bush, whose last name is still a political handicap but whose Hispanic wife, half-Hispanic children and fluent Spanish are a major asset to dragging Republicans out of their white corner.<br />
As such figures rise, and perhaps bring with them a greater sensitivity over issues such as immigration, they will strike a blow for the reformers and the party's makeup will come to better represent the wider American public. Yet it might not be that simple. In an economy still struggling with high joblessness and the threat of renewed recession still looming, convincing some of the party's stressed base might not be easy. "The backroom people in the party look at the numbers and know they have a problem. But it is another thing to convince the base," said Professor Shaun Bowler, a political scientist at the University of California at Riverside.<br />
Neither is it as easy as just shifting the ethnic tone of the party's public image. Many Republican activists say that Hispanics – who often display a strong social conservatism around Roman Catholicism – should find a natural home in the party. However, many also bring with them a profoundly different sense of the role of government. The hostility many in the Republican party express towards government programmes can be just as off-putting to many Hispanic voters as their opposition to abortion and gay marriage might be attractive.<br />
It is not likely to be an easy process. Some believe Romney came close enough to victory to allow an even fight in the coming Republican civil war and thus ensure a protracted and painful debate that will stretch on for years. What the party really needed, some think, was to have nominated a died-in-the-wool ultra-conservative in 2012 such as Rick Santorum or Newt Gingrich who could have led the party to an overwhelming defeat, forcing the reformist wing to triumph. But the selection of Romney denied them that piece of creative destruction, even though the party has now lost the popular vote tally in five of the last six presidential elections. "They are still maybe at the early stages of denial," Bowler said.<br />

Democrats are largely celebrating the prospect of this fight. The glee among the liberal left has been unrestrained, ranging from serious political pundits, such as MSNBC host Rachel Maddow and film-maker Michael Moore, to the viral popularity of an internet site showing photographs of sad Republicans on election night called "<a href="http://whitepeoplemourningromney.tumblr.com/" title="">White People Mourning Romney</a>".<br />
The Democrats, in fact, are licking their lips at the prospect of the next four years. Obama's brilliant strategists have created a highly effective coalition of minorities, younger women voters and urban educated people. They eked out an election win in the most trying of economic circumstances by getting those people to the polls. But some people think the Democrats also have a problem. Obama lost the white vote in America by some 20 points, and perhaps that should not be ignored. "It is not good to lose the white vote by that margin," said Haas. "This election was visionless on both sides, it was just about stitching together enough votes to get to the top."<br />
The Republicans may be about to have a civil war over their future but the Democrats also have their issues when it comes to the full spectrum of America's broad and diverse electorate. When any political system fights over identity politics rather than actual ideas, no one really wins.<br />

In a way, I blame my friend Greg Sargent. In the first week in January, he noted, almost in passing, that Mitt Romney seemed to be making a lot of false claims, and someone "<a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/post/another-day/2012/01/06/gIQAYoy8eP_blog.html">really should document them all</a>." That struck me as a good idea, so I decided to tackle this on my own.<br />
After all, I thought at the time, how hard could this be? Once a week, I'd let readers know about Romney's whoppers, which I assumed would total about a half-dozen a week, and maybe after the election, I'd do a top 20 list of my favorites. The project would be a nice little Friday-afternoon feature.<br />
Little did I know at the time that Romney would become an ambitious prevaricator, whose rhetoric would come to define post-truth politics. Nearly 11 months after Greg Sargent's harmless suggestion, I've published 40 installments in this series, which, before today, featured 884 falsehoods. (If you include today's edition, the new total is 917 falsehoods for the year.)<br />
I wish that were a typo. It's not.<br />
The outcome of next week's election remains in doubt, but regardless of who wins, I suspect this will be the final edition in the series. If President Obama wins, the project will have run its course. If Romney wins, I rather doubt I'll be able to keep this going every week for four years. So, with that in mind, enjoy the 41st and probably final installment of my weekly series, chronicling Mitt's mendacity.<br />
<br />
<b>1.</b> At a campaign event yesterday in Roanoke, Virginia, Romney again suggested the president is to blame for the fact that "gasoline prices" have "gone up."<br />
This is <a href="http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/10/17/14513614-the-politics-of-the-painful-price-at-the-pump?lite">wildly misleading</a>. It's true that when Obama took office, gas cost about $1.81 a gallon, and it's more than double now. And how did gas prices get so low in late 2008 and early 2009? Because there was a global economic catastrophe -- gas was cheap because the economy had fallen off a cliff, and demand crawled to a stop. As the economy improved, demand went up, and the price of gas started climbing. It's Economics 101.<br />
<b>2.</b> In the same speech, Romney said he should be elected in order to prevent "four more years of trillion dollar deficits in Washington."<br />
According to the budget plan Romney endorsed, we'll have four more years of trillion dollar deficits in Washington anyway.<br />
<b>3.</b> Romney added he has a "five-point plan ... that'll get this economy going."<br />
The five-point plan -- oil drilling, trade, privatizing K-12 education, vague assertions about debt reduction, and ambiguous promises about doing nice things for small businesses -- is <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/19/opinion/krugman-snow-job-on-jobs.html?ref=opinion">a rehash of Bush/Cheney promises</a>. No credible analysis of the vague agenda has found it capable of boosting the economy.<br />

<b>4.</b> At a campaign event in Doswell, Virginia, Romney said "Obamacare" is "crushing small businesses across America."<br />
There is <a href="http://maddowblog.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/07/09/12639982-to-fix-a-problem-one-must-first-understand-it?lite">literally no evidence</a> to support this claim in any way. Indeed, a a significant portion of the ongoing cost of the Affordable Care Act is to give small businesses a tax break.<br />
<b>5.</b> In the same speech, Romney also argued, "The president wants to raise taxes on small business."<br />
In reality, Obama has repeatedly cut taxes on small businesses -- by some counts, 18 times -- and if given a second term, his tax plan would have no effect <a href="http://on.msnbc.com/RnUS7a">on 97%</a> of small businesses.<br />
<b>6.</b> Romney also vowed, "I will not raise tax on ... middle-class America."<br />
There's ample reason to believe <a href="http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/09/05/13683728-fact-checking-a-fact-check?lite">the exact opposite</a> -- independent budget analysts have concluded that once Romney slashes taxes on the wealthy, increases defense spending, increases entitlement spending, and cuts corporate tax rates, all while promising to balance the budget, he'll have no choice but to ask more from the middle class. Indeed, there's no other way for Romney to keep his other promises.<br />
<b>7.</b> In a television ad, Romney claimed Obama "gutted the work requirement for welfare."<br />
This continues to be <a href="http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/08/22/13413612-its-just-completely-false-and-im-pretty-stunned?lite">as obvious a lie</a> as Romney has told all year.<br />
<b>8.</b> In the same ad, Romney claimed there's been "record unemployment" under Obama.<br />
The unemployment rate topped out at 10% a few years ago, and that's not even close to being a "record."<br />
<b>9.</b> The ad went on to say the rates of "women in poverty" are at their highest rates "ever."<br />
Poverty rates were vastly worse during the last global financial crisis, the Great Depression.<br />
<b>10.</b> The same ad claimed Obama financed the debt by "borrowing from China."<br />
The implication here is that U.S. debt is financed by the Chinese, but this isn't true -- China only holds <a href="http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2011/07/21/who-owns-america-hint-its-not-china/">about 8%</a> of the nation's debt.<br />
<b>11.</b> In a different ad, Romney claimed to "have a plan to help the auto industry."<br />
Asked for a copy of that plan, the Romney campaign refused to provide one.<br />
<b>12.</b> The same ad suggests Jeep production is moving "to China."<br />
This is <a href="http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/11/01/14858421-an-exercise-in-deception?lite">breathtakingly dishonest</a>.<br />
<b>13.</b> Romney said on Monday he'd cancel his campaign rally in Ohio on Tuesday, out of sensitivity for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.<br />
<a href="http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/10/30/14805057-parsing-the-meaning-of-campaign-event?lite">He held a campaign rally anyway</a>.<br />
<b>14.</b> In a radio ad this week, Romney suggested Obama saved the auto industry "for China," adding that "GM cut 15,000 American jobs" because of the president.<br />
GM itself responded to this by <a href="http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/10/31/14828758-weve-clearly-entered-some-parallel-universe?lite">saying</a>, "We've clearly entered some parallel universe during these last few days. No amount of campaign politics at its cynical worst will diminish our record of creating jobs in the U.S. and repatriating profits back to this country."<br />
<b>15.</b> The same radio spot adds, "Mitt Romney grew up in the Auto Industry. Maybe that's why the Detroit News endorsed him."<br />
No, the <i>Detroit News</i> specifically called Romney's approach to the auto rescue "wrong-headed."<br />
<b>16.</b> At a campaign event in Avon Lake, Ohio, Romney claimed, "[W]e're at a 30 year low in the number of new businesses that have started up."<br />
<a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/fact-checker/post/mitt-romneys-hyped-up-business-start-up-statistic/2012/04/20/gIQAF77bWT_blog.html">This still isn't true</a>.<br />
<b>17.</b> In the same speech, Romney said, "In Europe ... their corporate tax rate, which used to be higher than ours is now down to 25 percent. Ours is 35 percent. So businesses that are thinking of investing are interested in going elsewhere."<br />
This is <a href="http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/02/22/10479822-obama-plan-cuts-corporate-tax-rate?lite">wildly misleading</a>, since the <a href="http://motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2012/02/no-american-corporations-are-not-being-crushed-under-irs-jackboot"><i>actual</i> income tax</a> paid by corporations "is one of the lowest in the world."<br />
<b>18.</b> Romney went on to say, "I'm going to make sure that we finally get America on track to have a balanced budget."<br />
<a href="http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/10/16/14484039-secretary-of-explaining-stuff?lite">No he won't</a>. Romney's plan slashes tax rates (which makes the deficit worse, not better), increases defense and entitlement spending (which makes the deficit worse, not better), and every independent analysis reaches the same conclusion: Romney's numbers don't add up.<br />
<b>19.</b> Referencing the president, Romney said, "He's cut Medicare $716 billion."<br />
This is <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/31/opinion/Krugman.html?ref=opinion">deeply silly</a>. Obama strengthened the Medicare system's finances by reducing payments to insurance companies and hospitals. Benefits for seniors have been expanded, not cut.<br />
<b>20.</b> Romney also argued, "[T]he president's been spending massively more than he's been taking in."<br />
Government spending is <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/05/15/484767/obama-budget-chart/">down</a>, not up, under President Obama.<br />
<b>21.</b> Romney went on to boast, "I have a plan that'll create 12 million new jobs."<br />
Putting aside the pesky detail that Romney doesn't actually have a specific jobs plan, the claim about 12 million jobs has been <a href="http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/10/16/14481665-romneys-central-jobs-argument-exposed-as-fraudulent?lite">definitely proven fraudulent</a>. His own economic advisor was forced to concede the candidate's -- and the campaign's -- talking point was based on a falsehood.<br />
<b>22.</b> Romney also claimed, "I was governor of a state with a legislature that was 85 percent Democrat. I knew from the very beginning to get anything done, I had to reach across the aisle and I did."<br />
<a href="http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/10/24/14668583-remembering-romneys-relative-disinterest-in-bipartisan-collaboration?lite">No he didn't</a>.<br />
<b>23.</b> At a campaign event in Tampa, Romney said, "Latin America's economy is almost as large as that of China."<br />
That's actually <a href="http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2012/10/22/_2012_foreign_policy_debate_five_misguided_economic_themes.html">not true</a>.<br />
<b>24.</b> In a speech on the economy in Ames, Iowa, Romney said Obama "doubled" the deficit.<br />
Romney is still having trouble with the definition of "double." The deficit on Obama's first day was $1.3 trillion. Last year, it was also $1.3 trillion. This year, it's $1.08 trillion. When he says the president "doubled" the deficit, as he has many times, Romney's lying.<br />
<b>25.</b> In the same speech, Romney said Obama has "proposed any solution at all" to address Medicare's finances.<br />
Actually, Obama shored up Medicare's finances by finding $716 billion in savings, and has a long term plan through IPAB.<br />
<b>26.</b> Romney went on to say the president "did not tame the spending and borrowing."<br />
Not only did government spending go <a href="http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2012/05/15/484767/obama-budget-chart/">down</a> under Obama, the deficit also went <a href="http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/10/15/14452120-the-wrong-issue-for-the-wrong-candidate?lite">down</a> under Obama.<br />
<b>27.</b> Romney added that Obama "did not reach across the aisle."<br />
Obama repeatedly pleaded with congressional Republicans to work on common solutions. GOP lawmakers responded by opposing every idea, including <a href="http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2010_02/022428.php">their own</a>.<br />
<b>28.</b> Romney also said the president "did not stand up to China's trade practices."<br />
<a href="http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/10/19/14562548-wto-sides-with-obama-over-china?lite">Yes he did</a>.<br />
<b>29.</b> Romney claimed Obama has "added almost as much debt held by the public as all prior American presidents in history."<br />
He's said this before, but it's <a href="http://elections.nytimes.com/2012/debates/presidential/2012-10-03#sha=21002741b">not even close</a> to being true.<br />
<b>30.</b> Romney also argued the president "launched an onslaught of new regulations, often to the delight of the biggest banks and corporations."<br />
Putting aside the irony of Romney suggesting Obama is beholden to corporations, there has been <a href="http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/oct/18/mitt-romney/federal-regulations-quadrupled-under-obama/">no regulatory onslaught</a>.<br />
<b>31.</b> Romney went on to say, "Energy prices are up in part because energy production on federal lands is down."<br />
Nice try, <a href="http://mediamatters.org/research/2012/10/17/will-media-fact-checkers-rise-to-the-romney-deb/190685.">but no</a>.<br />
<b>32.</b> Romney claimed, in reference to Obama, "[H]is tax plan has been calculated to destroy 700,000 jobs."<br />
<a href="http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/2012/07/17/fact-check-industry-financed-study-gets-president-s-tax-cuts-wrong">Oh, please</a>.<br />
<b>33.</b> Romney added, "[C]utting one trillion dollars from the military will kill jobs and devastate our national defense."<br />
Romney appears to be referring to cuts, which have not yet kicked in, and which were <a href="http://maddowblog.msnbc.com/_news/2012/08/30/13570869-gop-denounces-gop-defense-cuts?lite">crafted by Romney's own party</a> and endorsed by his own running mate.<br />

Frum, a conservative who served as a speechwriter for President George W. Bush, made his remarks Friday on MSNBC's "Morning Joe." He added that the GOP had been overrun by fear-mongers.</div>
<br />
"The problem with Republican leaders is that they're cowards," Frum said, adding that the party's base of donors "went apocalyptic" in the last four years.<br />
"Republicans have been fleeced and exploited and lied to by a conservative entertainment complex," he said.<br />
"Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough pressed him to "name names," which Frum skirted around, but he said there were "too many."<br />
Frum said he interviewed protesters at Tea Party rallies and found that a majority was convinced that taxes increased and that the federal government spent more than $1 trillion on welfare each year. Both claims are false.<br />
"The followers, the donors and the activists are so mistaken about the nature of the problems the country faces," Frum said.<br />
